Cologne Christmas Market Guide 2021

The Cologne (Köln) Christmas Markets are in full swing this holiday season! With several markets spread throughout the city, you will never be too far from a glühwein booth nor hard pressed to find something to eat. Read below for a Christmas Market guide on where to explore in Cologne!

Dates: Most of the Christmas markets will be open from November 22 to December 23, 2021; times vary depending on the market. Per the Cologne Tourism site, the Heumarkt venue will also be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. between December 26, 2021, and January 9, 2022 (closed: December 24 and 25, 2021).

Note: Currently, the 2G rule applies; masks are required throughout the market. Each booth will ask to see your hand stamp, which you can get at any booth after showing proof of vaccination. Check out the official site here to stay up to date.

Where are the markets located? Check out the Cologne Tourism Website.

Weihnachtsmarkt am Dom

Set against an impressive backdrop, this market graces the steps of the Cologne Cathedral. I visited this one last but it’s a good starting point, or a way to round out your visit. There is also a restroom in this location, which is something I always keep an eye out for! The goods here are pretty typical- nothing too out of the ordinary but I enjoyed the selection of merchandise.

Heinzel’s Winter Fairytale

I came upon this market by happenstance, coming from the Cologne Harbor Market. It’s comprised of two markets: The Alter Markt and Heumarkt (which is open until 9JAN22!). Click here for a map! This market is the most recreational and offers ice skating and a chance to play ice stock sport. Tickets and prices can be found here.

Also, the quality of items found in the Alter Markt is unrivaled compared to other markets I’ve visited. There are a lot of handmade and unique items for purchase. I found myself coming back to this location two days in a row to purchase these handmade, ceramic houses.

Cologne Harbor Christmas Market

Located right outside of the Chocolate Museum is the Harbor Market. I recommend eating here and trying the flammlachs- fresh salmon roasted on a firepit, served either over a salad with your choice of sauce or with bread. The flavor was on point!

There is also a restroom here on site. Thumbs up!

Flammlachs
Glühbier

I also recommend trying the Glühbier- it was the perfect balance of bier and spices, slightly effervescent but not too carbonated.

Other Markets in the Area

I was not able to visit these in the 24 hours I was there but I will definitely be making it back soon!

Christmas Garden, Cologne Zoo

After hours, the zoo transforms into a magically illuminated garden! This activity is perfect for families to get a break from the Christmas markets. While the facilities are limited, there are concession stands to purchase some food items and warm drinks along the path. Dress warmly and bring an umbrella just in case!

Cologne Christmas Market Tips

  1. Try to visit during the week days. I made the mistake of coming on a Saturday night due to my travel itinerary. The market was PACKED and there were crowds around the glühwein stalls.
  2. There is a green train that drives around to all the Christmas Markets. Prices and time tables can be found here. I also like their map of the markets. I found the markets within walking distance, but some may get a kick out of catching a ride!
  3. Carry a lot of cash. I know, not the best idea if you are trying to cut back on spending, but it’s much better than being cold and thirsty discovering that you are short on Euro!
  4. Bring a backpack or a reusable bag for all your purchases. I find it rare when vendors give you bags. I had a packable backpack that came in handy- I only wish it was waterproof!
  5. Dress warmly! It is December after all!
  6. Take public transportation if you can. The roads and busy with travelers and market trotters!
